Barcoding Microwave-Safe Dishes: What Housewares Suppliers Should Know

The page title points to a product category that shows up often in retail supply chains: microwave-safe dishes and food containers. They look simple on a shelf, but they bring real labelling and data-exchange challenges for manufacturers, importers and distributors selling into big-box and grocery retailers.

Labels that survive the product's real life

Dishes are often sold in multipacks, shrink-wrapped sets or individual units, and each selling level needs its own identifier. A single bowl, a four-piece set and a shipping case of sets usually carry different GTINs. When the barcode is printed on the item itself, for example on a sticker on the base, choose an adhesive that peels cleanly. Shoppers do not want residue on a dish they plan to heat. Packaging labels need good contrast and quiet zones. Glossy film over a barcode can cause scanning failures at the checkout, so test your scans on the finished packaging, not just on the artwork proof.

Product attributes in EDI and item data

Retailers increasingly expect detailed product attributes alongside the basic item record. For cookware and tableware, these often include:

  • Material, such as glass, ceramic, stoneware or a specific plastic
  • Usage claims, including microwave-safe, dishwasher-safe, oven-safe and freezer-safe
  • Dimensions, capacity and weight for each pack level
  • Case pack and pallet configuration for receiving and slotting

Mismatches between the label, the item catalogue and the advance ship notice (ASN) are a common cause of chargebacks. If a carton is marked as six sets but the ASN lists eight, the receiving dock flags it, and the supplier usually pays for the discrepancy.

Fragile goods and shipping compliance

Ceramic and glass items add handling requirements. Each carton's SSCC label should be placed where it can be scanned without unstacking the pallet. Fragile markings should not cover the barcode. Well-planned purchase order, ASN and invoice flows help keep damaged or short shipments traceable back to a specific carton.
